#119, Things
Have you ever felt guilty throwing something away? Are there things you'll never use again, but still cannot bear the thought of letting them go? These feelings are difficult to explain, yet are a common human experience. A member of the popular website Reddit commented, “I actually cried when we switched microwaves when i was a kid. I felt like we should have given it a proper burial or something." Another, "I used to work at a toy store and if anyone ever bought a stuffed animal I would leave its head sticking out of the bag.. so it could breathe."
Humans have an irrational (adj. not logical or reasonable) attachment to simple, everyday objects. Our emotions are unpredictable and they often attach themselves to random things. We also have an odd tendency to put more value on things we own. The moment we become owner of something, it immediately becomes more valuable to us.
To complete this Journal response,
Describe a thing you have an attachment to (no electronics please). Describe a memory of the thing. Why do you have an attachment to the thing?
