Hobbes, from Bill Watterson's beloved comic Calvin & Hobbes, is Calvin's imaginary best friend

At a young age, I was infatuated with the novel, Ender's Game.  I particulary loved the idea of Battle School, a military-run school in space that trained youths to fight in the war against the buggers (aliens).  Within the school, students were divided into armies who battled regularly against one another in a schoolwide competition.  Army statistics and those of individual students were posted on a giant board in the cafeteria for all to see.  

The main character, Ender Wiggin, was one with whom I found many commonalities.  His angst and desire to win were defiining characteristics for me as a teen.  I felt he would be an ideal classmate and friend.
