#18, Why not eat insects?
SOURCE: http://www.ted.com/talks/marcel_dicke_why_not_eat_insects.html
Marcel Dicke is an ecological entomologist that is trying to change the way people think about insects. In the presentation above, among other ideas, Mr. Dicke contends that eating insects will help decrease the food hunger gap (due largely to rapid population growth).
An average person already eats 500 grams of insects per year just from the insects that get mixed into processed foods (up to two larvae eggs are deemed safe in a small can of fruit juice and 60 insect "components" are deemed safe per 100 grams of chocolate). Futher, the combined biomass of the insects on Earth is GREATER than that of humans. There are several interesting arguments as to why humans should begin eating insects, yet they remain an exotic food. Do you think Mr. Dicke's solution is viable? Why or why not? If insects became a regular menu item in Korea, would you eat them? Defend your position.
Optional: Describe an experience you had dining on insects.
