• Analyze the essay and record your findings in your writing notebook:

• Title and Author.

• Hook. How does the author grab your attention?

• Thesis. Copy it.

• Supporting Details. What are the major supporting details in support of the thesis?

• Persuasive Devices. Identify 4+ devices the writer uses with an example of each (anaphora, rhetorical question, rule of three, strong modals, loaded diction, short impact sentence).

• Callback. How does the writer link the opening and closing of the essay? If the writer does not do so, how do they close the essay?

• Complete Activities 9–10 (pp. 156–159) in Great Writing 5.

NOVEL (30+ min.)

• Read chapters 9–10 in Animal Farm.

• Address the following in full sentences in your reading notebook:

1. How does retirement work on Animal Farm?

2. How does Boxer's life end?
