In class, you will write a full persuasive essay and the prompt will not be revealed until class time.
Adopt-a-Writer. Choose one editorial from the links below. You may print the essay and bring it to class as an aid.
Analyze the essay and record your findings in your writing notebook:
Title and Author.
Hook. How does the author grab your attention?
Thesis. Copy it.
Supporting Details. What are the major supporting details in support of the thesis?
Persuasive Devices. Identify 4+ devices the writer uses with an example of each (anaphora, rhetorical question, rule of three, strong modals, loaded diction, short impact sentence).
Callback. How does the writer link the opening and closing of the essay? If the writer does not do so, how do they close the essay?
Complete Activities 9–10 (pp. 156–159) in Great Writing 5.
