#242, Kid

As a kid, I believed in a nocturnal sprite who broke into my house while I was asleep, collected a freshly fallen tooth from underneath my pillow, and left money in exchange. Not only that, the Tooth Fairy would visit millions of other children, carefully retrieving teeth and leaving behind cold hard cash. Fragments of half-baked questions rattled around in my tiny skull. How did she manage such a vast operation? Where did she store all those teeth? How did she get all that money? And most importantly, why did she want little kids' teeth?!

This seemed completely reasonable for the first decade of my life. And I wasn't the only one. This was common knowledge in school and if you thought otherwise, you were a darn fool. “Of course the Tooth Fairy is real. Duh.” Looking back, it's amusing how we accepted this lawbreaking pixie without question. We never really thought about how it actually worked. We were kids.

To complete this Journal response, address the following:

  1. Describe a childish belief you held when you were a kid (the more absurd/embarrassing, the better). Then write a reflection about your younger self.

  2. Comment on a peer's response.
