#214, Read

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.
— George R.R. Martin

After you turn the last page of a great book, there is bittersweet taste. There is the warm feeling of having reached the end of a compelling story and the tinge of sadness that it’s all over. Sometimes in the middle of an engaging book, I start to feel a bit melancholy even halfway through, knowing that the story will end. After our favorite books have ended though, they remain in memory long after we’ve tucked them away. I imagine you all can vividly recall a book you read when you were younger. Some books are even powerful enough to change the way we view the world and think about ourselves.

So let’s put you in charge of the reading curriculum at PEAI. You must choose a new novel to be mandatory reading for the sixth graders in 2024. What would you choose?

To complete this Journal response, address the following:

  1. Select a book you’ve read. Why do you think it should be required reading for sixth grade?

    • Reminder: Your response must be 100% original in your own words.

  2. Comment on a peer’s response.
