#145, Mars
Mars is a planet that has long piqued humanity's interest. The red planet has inspired countless works of fiction, most of which paint a picture of a planet devoid of any earthen features. The surface winds howl endlessly creating massive dust storms and the only life is likely to creep out from underneath the surface hungry for human flesh. This portrait may soon completely change.
NASA recently announced that liquid water currently flows on Mars. Their Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter gathered imagery that shows streaks that grow and fade according to the seasons indicating that water is indeed present. This does not necessarily mean that Mars is habitable (i.e., able to be lived upon), but it is one of the most promising opportunities for human colonization in any of our lifetimes.
To complete this Journal response,
- Imagine that the world has arranged a colonization mission to Mars. All participants will be assigned a role (e.g., biologist, economist, teacher, student) and all of their needs will be taken care of. It will be up to the colonists to create the foundation of a new world for the human species. The trip is one way. Would you volunteer to be a Mars colonist?
