"Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es." -Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

"Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are" is a phrase that was coined by French author Anthelme Brillat-Savarin.  Mr. Brillat-Savarin's quote can be interpreted in a few different ways.  We are literally made of the foods we put into our body.  Our body digests these foods and they become part of our physical being.  This quote can also be interpreted to mean that the choices we make about food reveal our values and personality.  One who skips breakfast and eats McDonalds for lunch and dinner might value time, inexpensive meals, and convenience.  A vegan, one who does not eat animals or animal products, might value animal life above all else.  One who eats one meal a day, might not value food at all instead viewing it just as energy.

For this Journal response, we'll explore what we eat over a 24 hour period and interpret our findings.  To complete this week's Journal response,

  1. Keep a list of all the food and drink you consume over a 24 hour period.  Start when you wake up and end when you go to sleep.  Be precise.  Instead of juice, I'm Real Tomato Juice (8 ounces).  Instead of ramen, Shin Ramen Black (1 bowl).  For example,
    • Eggs (3)
    • Cream cheese (2 spoons full)
    • Peach (1)
    • Orange juice (1 cup)
    • Bacon, lettuce, and tomato Subway Sub (12 inches)
    • Yegam Cheese Chips (1 box)
    • Coca Cola (8 ounces)
    • Brewed coffee, Starbucks (1 cup, 12 ounces)
    • Kimchi stew (1 bowl)
    • White rice (1 bowl)
    • Oreos (4)
    • Water (4 cups)
  2. Write 100 words or more about who you are based on the food list.
  3. Comment on one of your peers' responses.
