#122, Elaborate
Look for the non-electronic item that is nearest your left hand. Pick it up. Move your fingers across the surface of the item. Toss it in the air. Put it in your palm and move your hand up and down slowly. Get a sense of its weight. Push it across the desk and feel the friction between the surfaces. This single object will form the basis of your response. Last week we described cinemagraphs that were abundant with detail. This week your task will be to take a single object and elaborate (to develop an idea in detail) on a description of it. To aid in that process, please use simile and metaphor as we learned in class.
SIMILE
A room without books is like a body without a soul. -Marcus Cicero
- simile n. a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (usually with "like" or "as")
METAPHOR
Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor. -Truman Capote
- metaphor n. a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable
To complete this week's Journal response,
- Elaborate on a description of your item. Use simile and metaphor to enrich your description.
- Comment on one of your peers' responses.
