  • Read pp. 179–196 in The Five People You Meet in Heaven.

  • Address the following in full sentences in your reading notebook:

    1. Find one moment in pp. 179–196 where Eddie begins to understand what happened to his love for Marguerite after she died. Describe what he learns. Include the page number. (2+ sentences)

    2. Think about your own life. Describe a relationship with a person, pet, or even a place that you have lost. What is left of the relationship today? (4+ sentences)

DEBATE (20+ min.)

  • Read Chapter 2: Rebuttal (pp. 143–149) in Debating in the World Schools Style: A Guide. A PDF of the reading may be downloaded HERE.

  • Address the following in full sentences in your debate notebook:

  1. What is rebuttal?

  2. What should you rebut?

  3. What is the difference between rebutting and adjudicating an opponent's case?

  4. Why is it incorrect to state, "You should never rebut examples"?

  5. Which is more important, rebutting rebuttals or rebutting an opponent's case? Why?

  6. Why is it important to be thorough in one's rebuttal?

  7. What is the problem with pre-prepared rebuttal? What is a more effective way to prepare for rebuttal?

  8. Write a question you have about rebuttal in debate.
