Classes will not be held from October 5 to 9 as PEAI will be closed.

WRITING (30+ min.)

  • Bring a laptop or tablet to class to type the first draft of your essay.

  • Complete Activities 13–14 (pp. 135–136) in Great Writing 5.

  • Prepare your draft for class. In your writing notebook:

  1. Label each paragraph of your draft What?, So what?, or Now what?

  2. Write 4–5 revision notes in the margin or on sticky notes: What will you change when you type?

NOVEL (30+ min.)

  • Read chapters 7–8 in The Outsiders.

  • Address the following in full sentences in your reading notebook:

  1. What injury does Johnny suffer from the church incident?

  2. What does the newspaper report about Johnny and Ponyboy?

  3. What crime will Johnny be charged with?

  4. Why does Randy decide not to fight in the rumble?

  5. Why does Johnny refuse to see his mother?

Unit 4:

  • Read from Silent Spring (pp. 363–364) in myPerspectives.

  • Answer Comprehension Check questions 1–4 (p. 365) in full sentences in your reading notebook.

  • Address the Analyze the Text questions 1–2 (p. 366).

DEBATE (20+ min.)

  • Read Vocal Presentation (pp. 188–191) in Debating in the World Schools Style: A Guide. A PDF of the reading may be downloaded HERE.

  • Address the following in full sentences in your debate notebook:

  1. What is vocal presentation?

  2. What is the biggest issue with vocal presentation?

  3. How can you slow your speed?

  4. What is the most important element of volume?

  5. How can you vary your style of presentation?

  6. What is a style change?

  • Write notes on what you liked and disliked about the speaker’s style in your debate notebook.
