The homework for classes from October 20 to 24 is below. Next to each assignment is the recommended amount of time to complete it with proper quality.

JOURNAL (15+ min.)

  • Respond to Journal #171. www.brendenleeteacher.com/index

    • The journal post will be viewable Friday morning.

    • Journal responses should be 100+ words and 100% original.

VOCABULARY (30+ min.)

We will play Kahoot in class to review the vocabulary for the summative test. If you’d like to play, please bring a device to class (e.g., laptop, tablet). This is optional.

  • Complete Hidden Message (pp. 144–146) in Wordly Wise 3000, Book 7.

  • Study for the summative test.

    • A PDF of the word list may be downloaded HERE.

WRITING (20+ min.)

  • Choose one of the topics below. Then create an outline of your piece of writing in your writing notebook. The outline should be 100 words or more.

    • My Memory. Describe a memory from this year at PEAI and what made it meaningful to you.

    • Dear PEAI. Write a letter to PEAI as if it were a person. Start the letter, “Dear PEAI,”

    • Letter to Younger Self. Write a letter to your younger self for the first day of grade six.

    • Life Lesson. Describe a life lesson you learned from this year at PEAI.

    • Overcoming Adversity. Describe one of your struggles this year and how you dealt with it.

    • My Year at PEAI. Reflect on your time here at PEAI. What has this time meant for you?

    • Creative Writing. Consider a lesson, theme, story, etc. from this year at PEAI and create a piece of creative writing.

NOVEL (30+ min.)

  • Read chapters 11–12 in The Outsiders.

  • Address the following in full sentences in your reading notebook:

  1. Why does Randy visit Ponyboy in the hospital?

  2. What is the result of Ponyboy’s trial?

  3. Describe Ponyboy’s behavior after the trial.

  4. How does Ponyboy and Darry’s relationship affect Sodapop?

  5. What does Ponyboy write about for his English assignment?

  • Review your class notes and grammar textbook for the test. You should be familiar with the following: active voice, passive voice, past participle

READING (30+ min.)

Unit 5:

Facing Adversity

  • Read from Grapes of Wrath (pp. 457–460) in myPerspectives.

  • Answer Comprehension Check questions 1–4 (p. 461) in full sentences in your reading notebook.

  • Address the Analyze the Text questions 1–4 (p. 462).

    • For question 4, write 50+ words.

DEBATE (20+ min.)

  • Read Points of Information (pp. 200–210) in Debating in the World Schools Style: A Guide. A PDF of the reading may be downloaded HERE.

  • Address the following in full sentences in your debate notebook:

  1. What is a point of information?

  2. How many points of information should you offer?

  3. When should you offer points of information?

  4. When should you NOT offer points of information?

  5. How should you offer points of information?

  6. What should happen if two teammates offer a POI simultaneously?

  7. How should a POI be phrased?

  8. What is the maximum length for a POI?
